  1. so·lu·tion: noun

the act of solving a problem, question, etc.: The situation is approaching solution.

  2. the state of being solved: a problem capable of solution.
  3. a homogeneous, molecular mixture of two or more substances.

The process of designer is a on going system of planning, exploring, testing, and evaluating, design problems in order to reach design solutions. Solution, simply means to solve a problem. A solution is also “a homogeneous, molecular mixture of two or more substances.”

What this means is no solution exist without a least 2 parts. In science these 2 parts are called solutes and solvents. In Ink for example, the solvent is simply water. The solute is dye that colors the ink.

If we apply this same logic to design, we find a unique connection between the designer, and the client. In order to create a design solution you need at least 2 parts. The solvent in most cases would be the client and the solute would be the designer. Together they mix to solve a design problem or create a “design solution.”
